19-year-old Newcastle player set to get his big chance in pre-season, Eddie Howe wants to assess him - journalist

Eddie Howe is ready to cast his eye over one of Newcastle United’s most talented teenagers this summer.

The Magpies are hoping to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but they might not necessarily have to splash the cash to do just that. They could promote from within, with Newcastle United boasting some very exciting youngsters in their ranks.

This season we have seen Lewis Miley emerge as a star, having got the chance at 17-years-old to be a Newcastle regular in the Premier League and the Champions League. The teenager held his own, hinting at an incredibly bright future in black and white.

Now the club will want more players to do what Miley has done, and make the step up to Premier League level.

Newcastle United have an exciting 19-year-old on their books

Toon fans believe that they have a player who is ready to do just that, as he continues to enjoy a sensational loan spell away from Tyneside.

Yankuba Minteh has developed into a real star at Feyenoord, having joined the Dutch club on loan immediately after he was announced as a Newcastle United player.

The 19-year-old winger has performed very well in the Eredivisie, while he also helped Feyenoord win the KNVB Cup last weekend – even if he was sent off in the final for two yellow cards.

There have since been reports that he wants to spend a second season on loan in Rotterdam, but the final decision will rest with Newcastle United.

What Newcastle plan to do with Yankuba Minteh

And HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that Eddie Howe is keen to look at the winger in pre-season before making a decision about his future.

“I’m sure that will be the case [that Minteh is involved in pre-season],” he said.

“I’m sure Eddie Howe wants to take a look at him.

“I think they were going to have a look at him with a view to sending him back out on loan, but now I think they will have a genuine look to see if he’s an option to step straight in for Miguel Almiron, who I think will go. He could save Newcastle a bit of money.”

Big summer ahead for Minteh and Newcastle

It only makes sense that Newcastle take a closer look at Minteh before making a proper decision about his future. He might blow everyone away in training and prove that he is already Premier League level.

And he could certainly be an ideal replacement for Miguel Almiron, who is likely to leave St James’ Park this summer. Minteh has compared himself to Miggy in the past, while the club have spoke to the Gambia international about how he has similar qualities to Newcastle’s current number 24.

Replacing Almiron with Minteh would save Newcastle some money, but it will all depend on how much the latter impresses. If the club are not fully convinced then a second season on loan could be for the best.

It may also depend on who Newcastle are planning to bring in, as they want to sign a versatile forward when the transfer window opens. If their marquee signing is a right winger, it would probably limit Minteh’s chances of playing in the short-term.

It is all up in the air for now, and it will be until he gets the chance to show Newcastle United how much he has improved in pre-season.
