Cambridge United retain Sky Bet League One status with 0-0 draw at already-relegated Port Vale

Drink it in Cambridge United supporters – the U’s are staying up!

What was set up to be a potentially nail-biting afternoon away at Port Vale proved to be anything of the sort. That was partly down to United getting the point that they required to ensure that they will be a Sky Bet League One club again next season thanks to a 0-0 draw, but also due to results elsewhere going in their favour.

In truth, large spells of today’s encounter at Vale Park was played at walking pace.

The already-relegated hosts seemed content to not force the issue, which was perfect from United’s perspective.

The best chance of the game fell to Vale striker Uche Ikpeazu, who from only four yards headed well wide of the target in the 54th minute.

It always felt as though Cambridge had another gear to find if they required it, with their most presentable opening going the way of leading marksman Gassan Ahamde but he could not sort out his feet in time after Elias Kachunga’s clever dummy.

But with Cheltenham Town losing 2-1 at Stevenage and Burton Albion going down 3-0 at Fleetwood Town, the more than 1,100 United fans that made the trip to Staffordshire were treated to a largely stress-free afternoon.

And as it was, United moved above Shrewsbury Town in the final standings and up to 18th – four points above the relegation zone.
