Gers kit leak sees 20-year throwback that could cause fans sleepless nights

Rangers fans of a superstitious nature might want to avoid the reported new home strip for next season given the similarities to a campaign that didn’t quite go to plan.

This time of year is an exciting one as the footballing year draws to a close and the silverware is handed out, it also means fans can look forward to new strips.

Philippe Clement has managed to claw Rangers back into contention but has a potential leaked image of the new home kit ruined our chances for 2024/25 before it has even started.

Rangers fans get glimpse of potential new kit

Since Castore took over as kit and merchandise partners, every seasons has seen something familiar.

Colour schemes with a nod to the past like the famous lilac strip of 1994/95 or this seasons navy and amber that is a throwback to 1993/94.

The home tops too have sometimes had an eerie familiarity about them with the last two home strips bearing an uncanny resemblance to successful Rangers teams of the 2010s.

With recent releases, Castore has been good at keeping a tight ship and not letting any designs emerge until Rangers themselves issued teasers.

This time around they haven’t been quite as lucky.

Images emerged on social media today featuring a Rangers home shirt that appeared simple and effective.

One fan’s simple and effective is another’s boring and lazy though and the design instantly split opinion.

When do they not?

This one has similar traits to the 2005/06 strip which some fans might want to forget.

Shades of a season to forget for Rangers

From the highs of Helicopter Sunday and winning the league cup, Alex McLeish was lucky to last as long as he did.

The overperforming manager was to be replaced by Paul le Guen the next season but the Frenchman’s reputation somewhat struggled to live up to expectations.

Sometimes managers are replaced because of style of play, whereas McLeish, despite being up against it for long periods due to budget constraints and ripping up a successful squad, lost his job due to results.

Third in the league, fourth round of the Scottish Cup and quarter-finals of the league cup, not exactly a season to be proud of, all whilst wearing a home strip that looks to have been the inspiration for the new one – if you swap the white for red piping.

On paper, McLeish should never have been able to compete with a Celtic team that was regularly spending £5m on one player whilst he was having to gamble with mainly free transfers and players from the academy.

Back to the kit, they always look better in real life but, as the recent announcement about record Castore revenue shows, it will be bought in its thousands regardless of how it looks.
