Aston Villa fans are now in agreement with Douglas Luiz verdict after Chelsea draw

Aston Villa fans are saying the same thing about Douglas Luiz after last night’s draw with Chelsea at Villa Park.

Aston Villa were forced to settle for a draw against Chelsea on Saturday evening, despite going 2-0 up in the first half.

It took just four minutes for the hosts to take the lead through a Marc Cucurella own goal, with Morgan Rogers extending the scoreline just before the interval.

In the second half however, things came crashing down for Unai Emery’s side, who succumbed to Chelsea’s pressure as Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher levelled the score.

A draw is a result that the Villans will be relieved to have earned after Axel Disasi’s injury-time winner was ruled out by VAR, a lucky escape for the Midlands club.

It was a below-par performance from Villa in the second half, with sloppiness seen all over the pitch which led to Madueke’s goal as Douglas Luiz was caught in possession on what was an uncharacteristically poor night for the midfielder.

Aston Villa fans react to Douglas Luiz performance against Chelsea

It’s extremely rare to see Luiz have a poor performance for Villa however, the 25-year-old has looked off-pace in recent weeks compared to the high level seen earlier in the campaign.

Against Chelsea, the midfielder was run ragged by Moises Caicedo, in what was an eagerly anticipated return for Luiz following his two-match suspension.

Ironically, Villa’s midfield looked to cope better with pressure without Emery’s prized player, telling of how far from his usual self he looked against the Blues.

The Brazil international completed just 13 passes in the 75 minutes he played, won two of his attempted six ground duels, lost possession eight times and committed two fouls, via Sofascore.

The main concern for the Villans was Luiz’s inability to take control in midfield, which subsequently lost Villa two points at a crucial part of the season.

Douglas Luiz seems to be missing Boubacar Kamara

A number of the tweets reference the narrative that the Brazilian is missing Bouabcar Kamara, who has been out of action since February after sustaining a gruelling ACL injury.

Before the Frenchman’s absence, Emery had relished in having the midfield pivot of Kamara and Luiz, who inspired each other to play their favoured styles in the engine room.

Kamara’s presence as an anchor in midfield gave the 25-year-old a licence to roam further up-field, something he has been less able to do without the reliability of his midfield partner.

Hopefully, Luiz will soon return to his usual high standards, putting his questionable display against Chelsea behind him.
