‘To be honest’: Ivan Capelli now says it’s ‘unlikely’ Adrian Newey joins one Red Bull rival next season

The future of Adrian Newey is arguably even more interesting than anything happening in the Formula 1 driver’s market.

The 65-year-old has masterminded more than a dozen championships in his career but appears to be on his way out of Red Bull.

Speaking to the Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, former driver Ivan Capelli has suggested there’s one team he can’t see Adrian Newey joining.

Unsurprisingly, virtually every team on the grid is on high alert and would love to bring Newey into the fold.

There may be some nervousness at Mercedes that he would upset the apple cart, but the pros might outweigh the cons and he’s an admirer of some of the work the team have done this season.

Aston Martin have plenty of money to throw around and have reportedly offered Newey a huge contract.

However, Ivan Capelli simply can’t see Newey moving to Ferrari if he does decide to leave Red Bull.

The possibility of joining Lewis Hamilton when he makes the switch from Mercedes must appeal.

But Newey has never been someone who chooses the easiest or most obvious option throughout his career.

Ivan Capelli can’t see Adrian Newey joining Ferrari

Adrian Newey started his career in CART before joining March, later Leyton House, but he got his first big break when he signed for Williams.

In the early 1990s, they were challenging for titles with Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost.

He’s been one of the most revered names in the sport ever since and has overseen periods of dominance at McLaren and Red Bull.

He joined Christian Horner’s outfit when he first took over from Jaguar and has helped them go from being a midfield team to one of motor racing’s most dominant outfits in recent years.

Newey and Capelli worked together at March and the Italian knows the 65-year-old well enough to suggest that a move to Ferrari seems unlikely right now.

That would be great news for Aston Martin, or McLaren who Damon Hill thinks should make a play to bring Newey back to the team.

Talking about Newey’s future, Capelli said: “To be honest, from what I can know of his thoughts, he is unlikely to arrive in Italy, unless there is an economic proposal that would make anyone pale.

“Out of habit, out of conceptuality of the work and mental organisation, and out of how he is used to, I still see him as very rooted in England.”

Despite Capelli thinking Newey wouldn’t join Ferrari, the Italian team are reportedly preparing to offer him a role outside of Formula 1 to tempt him to join the manufacturer.

Newey is currently working on hypercars at Red Bull away from F1 and that sort of project might appeal to him.

The 65-year-old is said to be unhappy with one thing Christian Horner has said about him and that might have played a part in his decision to leave.

The internal politics within the team have even brought Max Verstappen’s future into question and Toto Wolff is keen to pounce if he ends up seeking an exit as well.
