'I think I saw': Gabriel Agbonlahor jokes that Newcastle star was screaming at Eddie Howe yesterday

Saturday afternoon proved to be a successful one for Newcastle United.

While much of Newcastle’s performance in the early part of their part of their 5-1 win over Sheffield United was rather arduous, it turned out to be a positive day at St James’ Park.

After coming back into the game, Eddie Howe’s cruised to a big victory to offer fresh hope of Europa League qualification.

Towards the end, the Blades were there to be beaten and Newcastle racked up the goals.

Sheffield United were ambling towards their relegation at the end of the game as Howe’s team looked to give home fans something to cheer.

Callum Wilson came on to score his first goal since returning from injury and talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor joked he saw the striker screaming at Howe to bring him on, such was the ease with which Newcastle ended up cutting the Blades open.

Gabriel Agbonlahor makes joke about Callum Wilson after Newcastle vs Sheffield United

“I think I saw Wilson like screaming at Eddie Howe and saying, ‘Please bring me on’. Comes on and scores with his first touch,” he said at 6.16pm BST on 27/04/2024.

“That’s what it has come to. Players are like, ‘Please gaffer, come on, please let me get on. Sheffield United, I am going to get a goal’.”

Callum Wilson might have four games left as a Newcastle player

It’s promising to see Wilson back and scoring goals. With him available, it perhaps offers Howe the chance to rotate Alexander Isak throughout the hectic end to the season.

Though constant injuries have been hugely frustrating for Wilson, surely few would deny that he’s been an excellent signing. Having that kind of firepower off the bench has been a rare luxury for Howe this season.

Still, this could be the final period of Wilson’s career at St James’. The striker is seemingly looking to leave the club this summer, having lost his starting berth to Isak.

Wilson’s certainly got the quality to make an impact between now and the end of the season. If he can help secure a top-six finish before he departs, his Newcastle career will end on the high it deserves.
