'Absolutely immense': Journalist urges Sheffield Wednesday to offer 23-year-old a new contract now

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to ‘get those contract talks underway’ with one ‘immense’ player.

Sheffield Wednesday put on an exceptional display against play-off contenders West Brom yesterday.

The Owls had to beat the Baggies after climbing out of the relegation zone with last week’s win over Blackburn Rovers, and a huge 3-0 victory has now given them a brilliant chance at staying up.

Goals from Anthony Musaba, Ike Ugbo and Josh Windass confirmed the three points for the Owls, making it only one defeat in their last seven matches.

It was an excellent attacking display from Wednesday, while their defence was also heavily praised as they picked up a surprising clean sheet atHillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday need to open talks with ‘immense’ defender

Di’Shon Bernard was one player who was hailed for this contribution to the win, having been awarded a 9 rating by The Star at full-time.

The centre-back has been a huge miss in recent weeks, having spent the last month on the sidelines with an injury.

Bernard returned to the starting line-up against West Bromand shone – making four clearances, three interceptions and two tackles, as well as winning 100% of his aerial duels.

The 23-year-old’s performance against West Brom resulted in journalist Joe Crann urging the club to open talks over a new contract now.

He wrote on X: “Get those contract talks underway, #SWFC… Absolutely immense from Di’Shon Bernard today.”

Di’Shon Bernard could be tempted by the exit door

Bernard is one of a long list of players who are out of contract at the end of the season, despite only joining from Manchester United last summer.

The defender has been a standout performer when available and there is no doubt that there will be interest in his signature – especially if the Owls are relegated.

Bernard’s future may just depend on whether the club can stay up, but they really need to be working on a new contract before they give another Championship club the opportunity to snatch him from their grasp.

Back in September, Bernard admitted that he really wants to get back to the Premier League after leaving Old Trafford.

If he has the chance to move further up the Championship, then he could well look to leave Hillsborough on a free transfer.

However, if Danny Rohl ends up staying too, surely he would be tempted to stay and see if this team can fulfil the potential that the German has brought to the club.
