'Sense of relief': Pundit praises the 'extraordinary' thing Sheffield Wednesday fans did at the weekend

Sheffield Wednesday fans have been heavily praised for what they did on their trip to Ewood Park at the weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday took over 7,300 fans to their all-important clash against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

The match was shown live on Sky Sports and put added pressure on the Owls, with their relegation rivals already playing the day before.

Huddersfield had fallen to defeat and Birmingham were unable to prevent a 0-0 stalemate against bottom of the table Rotherham, meaning Wednesday knew exactly what they needed to do to get out of the bottom three.

All eyes were on the Yorkshire outfit and the thousands of supporters were in attendance to cheer their team onto victory, and they were certainly rewarded for their loyalty.

Danny Rohl’s side put three past Blackburn, with goals from Josh Windass and Marvin Johnson sending the fans crazy, before Aynsley Pears sliced the ball into the back of his own net for the third.

Sheffield Wednesday praised for ‘extraordinary’ limbs

It was a vital win that finally took Wednesday above the relegation zone, and fans knew exactly how important it was.

The supporters have now been praised for their ‘limbs’ in Lancashire, with pundit Justin Peach telling Second Tier Pod: “”It was a sense of relief I think, because this was a really tight game up until Marvin Johnson got that goal. It was a stop-start game as well, they never really got into a flow, it was a typical Sunday midday kick-off at the end of the season. There was a lot riding on it and a lot of nerves.

“That Johnson goal going in and that relief from the Wednesday fans was just extraordinary and their outpouring of relief was there to be seen in the limbs.”

Sheffield Wednesday fans have remained some of the very best in the Championship, despite a turbulent season that has seen them barely lift a toe from the foot of the table.

According to transfermarkt, the Owls have the seventh best average attendance at Hillsborough this season (26,465), below Sunderland, Leeds, Leicester, Southampton, Ipswich and Middlesbrough – five of whom have been fighting for promotion this term.

They also have thesixth-highest average away attendance (2,260), despite only winning six of their 22 games on the road so far.

The twelfth man is just as an important as the eleven

Wednesday supporters have been excellent and have constantly been praised this season, while the players have recognised how much it helps spur them on in important games.

The atmosphere in Hillsborough is exactly what these players need, especially in games like the draw against Norwich.

The Wednesday faithful will know exactly what to do this weekend too, because their chances of promotion will look all the more bleak if they fail to win on home soil. However, they have only managed three points in their previous four games in their back garden.
