'Only a matter of time': Sheffield Wednesday ace was an 'important cog' in win over West Brom - journalist

One Sheffield Wednesday star has been hailed as an ‘important cog’ for his display v West Brom.

Sheffield Wednesday have given their chances at avoiding relegation a huge boost after claiming a vital three points this weekend.

Anthony Musaba netted his eighth goal of the campaign to give the Owls a first-half lead, before Ike Ugbo and Josh Windass completed an excellent performance at Hillsborough.

Wednesday now sit three points above the bottom three and only need a point on the final day to stay in the Championship.

It’s been a real committed race for survival from Wednesday in recent weeks, extending their unbeaten run to five games and scoring six goals in their last two.

Goals hadn’t come too easy for them this season though, having netted the second-lowest tally in the Championship.

However, Ike Ugbo’s arrival in January gave them some hope, with the striker bagging six goals in his first seven starts for the Owls.

Ugbo hadn’t found the net since the win over Rotherham in February though, making it eight matches without a goal.

The 25-year-old bagged against West Brom though and was hailed as an ‘important cog’ in their performance on home soil.

Ugbo was given an 8 rating by The Star, with journalist Joe Crann writing: “Röhl spoke in the week of his importance even without goals, but it did feel like it was only a matter of time before he was on the scoresheet again. Finished brilliantly to make it 2-0, and was an important cog throughout.”

The Canada international had two shots on target, made two tackles and made eight passes against the Baggies.

How important has he been away from the goals?

He didn’t see much of the ball and was limited to very few chances, but he took his chances well and did exactly what Wednesday need of him in the penultimate match of the season.

Ugbo has been pivotal in the Owls’ impressive run in the Championship, while his other six goals contributed massively to some vital points – with the side winning in every game he has scored in.

His goal will be a huge relief for him though after failing to score in almost three months, while he will be eager to end strongly with another goal against Sunderland next week.

Ugbo will have played a very important role in keeping the Owls up if they manage it, and even though his goalscoring form has dipped off, there is no denying that the team would really benefit from his permanent arrival this summer.
