Report: Newcastle are likely to agree a new contract with a key player; Howe wants to build around him

Newcastle United have some fantastic players.

While Eddie Howe’s squad is perhaps not at the level required to regularly compete for Champions League qualification and domestic trophies, Newcastle have some excellent talent on their books.

Anthony Gordon, for example, has been tipped as one of the best players in the Premier League this season.

Bruno Guimaraes, meanwhile, continues to dazzle and is reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal.

Then there’s Alexander Isak.

The striker is surely the best striker in the Premier League right now and took his tally up to 19 for the season bybagging a brace against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Isak is firing on all cylinders and, as a result, has been linked with a move away from the club.

Indeed, Arsenal are reportedly keen on the forward – who will soon see a roughly 20% cut in his wages along with his teammates for not qualifying for the Champions League.

Still, despite all the talk, Howe is believed to want to build around Isak for many years to come.

The prospect of doing that could be much easier soon enough.

Alexander Isak could soon sign a new contract with Newcastle

That’s because, according to The Daily Telegraph – it is now deemed likely that the club will agree a new contract with Isak within the next few weeks.

While the 24-year-old has four years to run on his existing deal, the new contract will reportedly move him alongside Guimaraes as the club’s top earner.

That isn’t believed to be likely to put potential suitors off but it is at least an indication that Newcastle mean business.

Alexander Isak is worth more than just money for Newcastle

Were Isak to leave, you’d have to ask questions about where the PIF project is going.

Guimaraes at least has a release clause in his contract, so there’s little Newcastle can do if someone activates it.

That isn’t thought to be in play when it comes to Isak, so Newcastle are well-protected.

Selling him would not only deprive Howe of a key player but it would be a statement that top players can move on from Newcastle when decent offers emerge.

Keep him at all costs, please.
