Paul Merson hammers Nottingham Forest 32-year-old after Manchester City defeat

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has slammed one Nottingham Forest player after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The Reds gave it a really good go in today’s Super Sunday clash but failed to throw the title race wide open.

A win for Arsenal over Tottenham had really piled the pressure on City but they did despatch Forest pretty comfortably in the end.

Things could have been different for the Reds, however.

Forest really went at City and did have some seriously good chances to score and make the game extremely interesting.

Sadly, Forest missed a host of chances and the Reds remain embroiled in a fierce battle against relegation.

Merson wasn’t happy with one Forest performer and he let his feelings known at the end of the City Ground contest.

Paul Merson slams Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood

Well, this wasn’t really the afternoon that Forest anticipated – and on another day they might have finished the game with more points.

Wood was extremely guilty of missing some really good chances and he won’t look back on this performance with a deal of fondness.

His effort in the first half was probably the best chance that he had but the man who has been in fine form this season fluffed his lines.

Merson wasn’t impressed and took aim at the Forest striker Wood during his post-game analysis.

He said live on Sky Sports: “Yeah, you have got to take your chances.

“When you play against Man City, you don’t get too many chances. And when you do, you have to take them and then hope you defend well.

“They missed two really good chances. Wood missed both of them.

“In my opinion, two very good chances. You can’t miss those chances. I don’t care if you are Arsenal, Liverpool or Man United. When you play against Man City, you have to score them.”

Wood will come again and fire for the Reds

With 13 goals to his name in all competitions this season, it’s fair to say that Wood does have some credit in the bank.

The 32-year-old has probably been the surprise package this season but he didn’t cover himself in glory this afternoon.

Wood looked distraught with himself at missing the two gilt-edged chances and he will be keen to move on from this.

Forest have to play Sheffield United and Burnley yet and Wood will fancy hitting the goal trail once again as the season draws to a close.

Wood has come in for some criticism from Merson and he will now look to prove his doubters wrong and help Forest remain in the Premier League.
