Cambridgeshire youngsters make impression at National Finals of the Junior Inter-County Squash Championships in Sheffield

Cambridgeshire Under-13s left their manager filled with pride after they recorded a sixth-placed finish at the National Finals of the Junior Inter-County Squash Championships earlier this month.

Cambridgeshire took a squad of six youngsters to Sheffield, with three of their members representing the county for the first time.

However, despite the inexperience within the ranks, the sextet gave a good account of themselves.

The squad of Louis Powley, Henry Milner, Samuel Goodger, Callum Calvert, Elliott Dewis and Joshua Fillmore finished sixth

After opening up with a 3-2 defeat to second seeds Northumbria, Cambridgeshire bounced back with a victory by the same scoreline against Wales.

Joshua Fillmore and Samuel Goodger both won at first and third strings respectively, but Wales won the fourth and fifth strings to send the contest into a decider, which was won by Cambridgeshire’s Henry Milner.

And they ended the competition with a second 3-2 defeat, which saw Elliott Dewis just edged out in the pick of the matches.

Team boss Martyn Goodger said: “Cambridgeshire squash is very proud of how hard our boys battled on court and how well they supported each other during matches. You couldn’t have asked for a better team spirit.”

Cambridgeshire, who had got the better of Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, and Lincolnshire to qualify for the Nationals, have players training across the county at venues such as Peterborough Squash and Racketball Club, Hunts County Squash Club, Swavesey Squash Club, St Ivo Rackets Club and Ely Squash & Leisure Club.
