What Callum Wilson said to Kieran Trippier just outside the dressing room after Newcastle beat Sheffield United

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson marked his St James’ Park return with a goal on Saturday.

The 32-year-old had made his comeback from a pectoral injury during the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, but was unable to inspire a comeback. Away from the result, Eddie Howe was delighted to have him back.

And so he should be, as Callum Wilson is a great goalscorer, while we have rarely had more than one striker available for the majority of the season.

But that has now changed, with both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson featuring in the 5-1 win over Sheffield United. They both scored too, with Isak getting a brace to take his season tally to 23. He received a huge amount of praise from the likes of Eddie Howe and Alan Shearer after another sensational display.

Wilson deserves big praise too, taking his chance in front of the Gallowgate as if he had never been away.

He was played in by Harvey Barnes, before striking a sweet half volley into the top corner to score his first goal since December. It was his ninth goal of the season, and eighth in the Premier League.

Wilson capped off what was an important victory with the Magpies’ fifth goal of the game, but he has hinted that should not have been the end of the scoring on Saturday.

What Callum Wilson said in the tunnel after Newcastle 5 Sheffield United 1

Following the 5-1 win over Sheffield United, the club have uploaded their behind the scenes footage to their official YouTube channel.

They show the players heading down the tunnel and into the dressing room, where they were met by some of the Magpies’ injured stars. The likes of Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Matt Targett were all in attendance, congratulating their teammates after an important win.

And there was a fun interaction between Wilson and Trippier, who is still out of action with a calf problem.

After receiving a big pat on the back from Joelinton and a handshake from Trippier, Wilson declared: “I should have had two big man, I should have had two!”.

Newcastle’s number nine hungry for more goals

There were more opportunities for Wilson to score. There was one moment when he came agonizingly close to rounding the goalkeeper, while another chance emerged when Alexander Isak played a neat header into his path.

Neither chance resulted in a goal for Wilson, who looks hungry heading into the final few games of the season.

It has been a frustrating year for the number nine, and he will be desperate to end the campaign strongly. Wilson has got four games to add to his tally, and he will have ambitions of at least ending the season as Newcastle’s second top scorer.

To do that, he will need overtake Anthony Gordon, who has got 11 goals to his name.
