'I understand': Injured Chelsea player is back out on the grass with the ball again - journalist

Chelsea have had to deal with an injury crisis all season long.

It is no doubt one reason why Mauricio Pochettino‘s side have struggled in the Premier League this term.

They have been without so many of their key players, including captain Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

Enzo Fernandez recently joined the likes of James and Chilwell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery.

It was not good news, but there has been a positive injury update since then.

As well as the above names, French duo Christopher Nkunku and Wesley Fofana have also been out injured.

The former has only been able to make 10 appearances this season, while the latter is yet to feature at all.

Fofana is not expected to return before the end of the campaign, but journalist Simon Phillips has some good news about the central defender.

On his Substack, he wrote: “I understand that on Thursday and Friday last week, Fofana finally worked with the ball once again on grass. He has been doing gym work and some cardio on grass for some time, but he’s now started individual work with the ball as well. This is a good sign.

“I highly doubt we see him this season though, but progress is progress.”

Why Chelsea can afford to take their time with Wesley Fofana

Pochettino is not short of central defensive options, possessing Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah.

Silva picked up a problem against Aston Villa over the weekend, but with Colwill set to return from his own injury, Pochettino should have enough left in the tank to get to the end of the season.

It means there is no need to rush Fofana, who is one of the club’s most expensive ever signings, back.

Sitting in ninth, Chelsea are not really playing for much either. It makes no sense to risk Fofana’s fitness over a Europa League or Europa Conference League spot, especially with neither being a guarantee.
