Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) was subjected to an online roasting Monday night after former President Donald Trump announced his former election year foe had pledged him "enthusiastic support."

Among the naysayers was MSNBC columnist Hayes Brown, who argued DeSantis' "tightening embrace of Trump" showed he was not "clinging to any sort of principle" but expressing "a need to be in proximity to power."

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has been busy shoring up support for his run for a second term as he finds creative means to funnel funds into his campaign coffers, Brown notes.

"While the cash flow dried up as it became clear that he was being steamrolled by Trump," Brown writes. "It’s likely that many of DeSantis’ major supporters will follow his lead and support the party’s nominee with their checkbooks."

Brown's take came after Trump announced on Truth Social that DeSantis had lined up with him against President Joe Biden.

""I am very happy to have the full and enthusiastic support of Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida," wrote Trump. "I greatly appreciate Ron’s support in taking back our Country from the Worst President in the History of the United States."

Trump was less enthusiastic in his praise for DeSantis before the Florida governor — whom he dubbed "Meatball Ron," "DeSanctus" and "DeSanctimonious" — dropped out of the race to be the Republican presidential nominee.

That may be why DeSantis received an onslaught of criticism.

"What a loser," posted Ron Filipkowski wrote. "He gave a very weak, tepid, halfhearted statement saying he will support him.

"That’s much different than calling him, begging forgiveness, asking for an in-person meeting, then agreeing to do a major fundraiser for him. Today was his total surrender."

"Bet Trump told DeSantis he's in the running for the VP stakes," Mr. Zip posted on X.

"Trump supporters love it," wrote Vince Langman. "However, a large percentage of DeSantis supporters have turned into Liz Cheney, never Trumpers."

"Translation," wrote X user @CaptainSmirker. "Ron DeSantis proves yet again what a spineless, feckless, fake-tough-guy he really is."
