Man charged in hit-and-run that killed 72-year-old pedestrian

A driver has been charged in a hit-and-run crash in Somerset County that caused the death of a 72-year-old pedestrian.

A pickup truck hit the woman as she was crossing a street in Somerville shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.

The truck was traveling on Veteran’s Memorial Drive and attempting to turn left onto Somerset Street when the crash occurred. After striking the woman, the vehicle made a U-turn, fled the area and returned later, parking in a lot near the scene, officials said.

The pedestrian, Flor De Maria E. Huamani-Sanchez, of Somerville, suffered internal injuries and severe head trauma. She was pronounced dead later that night at an area hospital, authorities said.

Andres Estaban Silva, 33, of Flemington, has been charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident involving death. Prosecutors did not say how he was identified as a suspect.

He is being held in Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
