Tottenham coach Jermain Defoe reveals he has now held talks over managerial vacancy

Tottenham Hotspur coach Jermain Defoe is now in talks over a potential managerial role which would see him leave north London.

It has been a weekend to forget for Tottenham who suffered derby defeat on the weekend is miserable fashion.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side now look set to battle it out for the fifth spot with Aston Villa in fourth looking too far ahead. tocatch.

A lot has changed at Hotspur Way since the Australian’s arrival last summer and a lot of it has been for the better.

And those changes will be set to continue over the summer as the 58-year-old will be looking to make the changes needed to make this squad his own after 12 months in the job.

But it seems as if one of the coaches in the Spurs academy could now be set for a summer exit along with some of the first-team players.

The Spurs legend, Defoe, has now been speaking about talks which have taken place over a potential opportunity for him to become a first team manager.

Jermain Defoe admits he’s held talks with club over their managerial vacancy

The former Spurs striker has now been coaching in the Spurs U18s since last year but he has already admitted he has bigger ambitions.

Earlier in the month, Defoe spoke about the possibility of making the step up from his role in the U18s set up.

Although he is yet to make that jump, Defoe reminded people that he spent a year at Rangers as a player/coach.

And he admitted that he has already issued his CV to a number of clubs despite only being issued the role at Tottenham earlier in the season.

Now, the 41-year-old has been speaking to the Sunderland Echo about his discussions with Sunderland AFC over becoming their next boss.

The Black Cats have chopped and changed their managers like it is going out of fashion over recent years and Defoe has revealed he’s held talks over the vacancy at the Stadium of Light.

“I’ve had no interview or anything like that,” he said.

“And like I said before when we spoke, I spoke about obviously the people that want to come with me and even in the background, certain players that I know that I can attract, young top players in the country that I can attract to try and get the club back into the Premier League.

“I’ve had those sorts of discussions. So nothing’s changed really, but I’ve not had an interview. I went to the Leeds vs Sunderland game and just watched the team and stuff like that. So that’s it.”

“So we’ll see. I’ve not had an interview or anything, but I think they’re aware that, obviously, I’d be interested in taking a job. Why not?”

Jermain Defoe could be the first Tottenham coach to leave this summer

Over the course of the season, it has become glaringly obvious that Tottenham need to change something with their set piece defending.

Currently, Mile Jedinak is the acting set piece coach and whatever he is doing in training is not translating to what the fans see at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs conceded twice from corners on the weekend in the North London Derby, but Postecoglou did not seem too concerned by the club’s inability to deal with set pieces.

“If I thought fixing defensive set pieces was the answer to us bridging the gap then I’d put all of my time and effort into that. But that’s not where we’re at,” he said.

Although the 58-year-old is clearly not overly concerned by their issues at defending corners, it is clear whatever Jedinak is doing is not working.
