Report: What some people at Chelsea were saying when the club signed Thiago Silva in 2020

Chelsea signed Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer back in 2020.

However, his four-year spell at Chelsea is coming to an end after the central defender confirmed yesterday that he is leaving the club at the end of the season.

Thiago Silva has been a great servant for the Blues, making 151 appearances since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

He also helped the club to win the Champions League during his first season in west London.

It seems, though, that some had their doubts about the Brazilian at first.

How some at Chelsea felt about the Thiago Silva signing

With Silva 35 at the time and being a player who PSG were willing to let go, not everyone at Chelsea seemed to be on board with the idea of bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

According to the Evening Standard, because of the above, some people at the club viewed Frank Lampard‘s decision to sign Silva as a gamble.

On a free transfer, it is hard to say he ever was. Chelsea had nothing to lose by bringing him in.

However, if Silva really was a gamble to some, then he has gone on to become a successful one.

How Chelsea plan to honour Thiago Silva

Despite having only been at Chelsea for four years, Silva has become a bit of a legend at the club.

Journalist Ben Jacobs says they now plan to honour the former PSG man by making him captain in the Blues’ final game of the season against Bournemouth.

Truthfully, though, following Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure last summer, Silva should have been handed the armband.

He has the experience and leadership skills needed to be a good skipper, as he showed at PSG when he was captain there. Mauricio Pochettino, though, wanted to go with Reece James, while making Ben Chilwell the 24-year-old’s deputy.

It is one of many questionable decisions during this new era at Chelsea.
