'Had been interested': Chelsea actually wanted to sign 26-year-old Man Utd star last summer - journalist

Last summer, Chelsea sold Mason Mount to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

However, it has now been claimed that Chelsea were also interested in signing someone from Manchester United.

Mason Mount‘s move to Old Trafford has not really worked out yet, though that has mainly been because of injury.

In total, the attacking midfielder has made just four starts in the Premier League.

With United sitting a few places higher than Chelsea in the table and in the FA Cup final, though, Mount may not necessarily regret his switch to the Red Devils.

Chelsea were interested in Manchester United star

With the likes of Mount, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic all departing, Chelsea needed attacking reinforcements.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, one of Mount’s United teammates is someone the Blues looked at.

On his Substack, he claimed: “Chelsea had been interested in Marcus Rashford last summer, haven’t heard of anything new and I believe our interest died out over this season.

“I do know Mauricio Pochettino is a massive fan of Rashford though, but I don’t expect anything to happen here now.”

Having scored 30 goals in all competitions last season, United would not have wanted to sell the 26-year-old, especially to one of their rivals.

Chelsea could have chance to sign Marcus Rashford this summer

If Chelsea’s interest comes back, it may be possible for them to sign Rashford in the next transfer window.

As per The Telegraph, while United are not actively trying to sell the England international this summer, they would consider a credible offer for him. That may mean Chelsea needing to make Rashford one of their most expensive ever signings in order to land his signature.

Rashford’s form has dropped significantly this term, with the forward managing just eight goals. It thus explains United’s current stance.

Amid Chelsea’s struggles, though, Stamford Bridge may not be the most appealing destination for him.
