‘I’m told by sources’: Adrian Newey now ‘seriously considering’ joining one Red Bull rival - BBC journalist

Adrian Newey’s days at Red Bull Racing appear to be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

After helping Red Bull win seven Drivers’ Championships thanks to Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen – who looks destined for title number eight – he looks set to move on to pastures new.

Writing on the BBC Sport website, journalist Andrew Benson has shared what sources close to Adrian Newey have told him about his next destination.

Unsurprisingly, teams up and down the paddock are on full alert about the 65-year-old’s availability.

He’s helped teams dominate Formula 1 in multiple eras and with new regulations coming in 2026, it would be a surprise if he wasn’t one of the first designers to understand the new rules this time around too.

Two teams appear to be at the front of the queue to hire Newey if and when he confirms his Red Bull exit – Aston Martin and Ferrari.

Benson has suggested that sources close to Newey believe he’s ‘seriously considering’ an offer from Ferrari.

Frederic Vasseur must have thought at the start of the year that he’d already made the signing of the season when he secured the signature of Lewis Hamilton.

Incredibly, that may be trumped should he convince Newey that a move to Maranello is in his best interest.

Adrian Newey is ‘seriously considering’ a move to Ferrari

After nearly two decades since their last championship win, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur is aiming to end that drought as quickly as possible.

Carlos Sainz is in the form of his life but has been replaced for 2025 by Lewis Hamilton.

He may be only a slight upgrade at that stage, but those marginal gains could make all the difference.

Ferrari have a strong design team already but it’s hard to argue that it wouldn’t be seriously improved by the arrival of Adrian Newey.

He has admitted in the past that he’s come close to a move to Maranello in the past.

While Aston Martin have made an astronomical offer to hire Newey, he doesn’t appear interested in that move.

Adrian Newey could finally have the chance to work with Lewis Hamilton

Talking about Newey’s future, Benson said: “[Adrian] Newey’s decision to leave Red Bull, reported by BBC Sport last week, is one of the most seismic events to happen in Formula 1 for a long time.

“Newey is rightly regarded as the greatest F1 designer in history so, even if he is not full-time on F1 these days, he will have a huge impact on any team he joins, and losing cannot but hurt the one he leaves.

“You can see the effect his setting the concept of the latest generation of Red Bulls has had on them.

“He has been made offers by Ferrari and Aston Martin. I’m told by sources close to him that he is seriously considering Ferrari but is not interested in going to Aston Martin.”

Adrian Newey might be seriously considering Ferrari’s offer because he would finally get the chance to work with Lewis Hamilton.

He previously admitted in a Beyond The Grid Podcast in September 2023 that the chance to work with Hamilton or Fernando Alonso would have been ‘fabulous’.

Newey said at the time: “But just as, for instance, working with Fernando and Lewis would have been fabulous. But it never happened. It’s just circumstances sometimes, that’s the way it is.”

The 65-year-old now has the chance to join either Alonso or Hamilton which he didn’t think was possible before.

It appears as though a move to Maranello is more tempting than Silverstone at this stage.
