Oliver Glasner wants Crystal Palace to sign £30m defender compared to Rio Ferdinand, amid reports

Oliver Glasner seems highly likely to welcome a new defender to Crystal Palace this summer amid doubts over the future of Marc Guehi.

Manchester United and Liverpool are looking at the Crystal Palace No.6 – according to The Times – with a £55m move potentially in the pipeline, as the Premier League’s elite show admiration for our England international.

Of course, if Oliver Glasner does lose a player as talented as Marc Guehi this summer, Dougie Freedman will have his work cut out to find a defender of similar quality.

Now – however – there is one name being mentioned as a potential signing who should excite Crystal Palace fans…

Crystal Palace could sign Rio Ferdinand 2.0

Well – according to the Telegraph – Crystal Palace are set to enter the bidding to sign Maxence Lacroix this summer.

Glasner signed the Frenchman from Sochaux during his time at the Bundesliga outfit, and is believed to still rate the central defender very highly.

Lacroix and the Austrian actually helped VfL Wolfsburg qualify for the UEFA Champions League during their time in Germany together, and the towering 24-year-old is expected to be on the shortlist if Guehi does indeed depart.

For those unaware of who the VfL Wolfsburg No.4 is, the Bundesliga’s official website have made a helpful comparison.

They write that Lacroix plays like Rio Ferdinand – describing the Crystal Palace target as an elegant defender who thrives at bringing the ball forward with his strong dribbling and passing skills.

Speaking about his own playing style, the man from Villeneuve-Saint-Georges said: “I’m quite athletic, I’m quick, I’m strong. I’m not bad with the ball at my feet, I’m able to do everything the coach asks of me. That’s the most important thing.”

Ferdinand was – of course – one of the best defenders of his generation, winning six Premier League titles across 504 Premier League appearances, so this comparison should excite Crystal Palace fans, to say the least.

What Oliver Glasner has previously said about Maxence Lacroix

As aforesaid, Glasner has signed Lacroix before, and the 49-year-old seems to admire the Frenchman’s character as well as his work on the pitch.

The man from Salzburg has previously said: “He greets me every day in German. I’m very satisfied with Maxence’s work.”

A story from The Sun claims that Lacroix – who is quicker than Michael Olise – is available for £30m this summer given the fact his contract expires in July 2025, so we could even make a £25m profit if Guehi does leave for a £55m fee.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as the link between Glasner and Lacroix certainly makes this transfer rumour an intriguing one.
