‘Excellent’ 22-year-old Liverpool player could be promoted into the first team under Arne Slot

Liverpool’s 22-year-old defender may finally be promoted to the club’s first team under Arne Slot.

With Arne Slot likely taking charge of Liverpool next season, it’s going to be a fresh slate for most of the squad.

This will be an opportunity especially for those players who were on the fringes of the team under Jurgen Klopp.

And for the players who were never regarded as Klopp’s plans, or who simply did not fit into his system.

Slot may play a similar style, but it’s not identical to Klopp, which means there will be players who could now get another opportunity to prove themselves in a Liverpool shirt.

Including a player who may have crossed paths with Slot in the past.

Why Sepp van den Berg may get his chance under Arne Slot

Interestingly, when Van den Berg joined PEC Zwolle as a youth player, Slot was still playing for the club’s senior side back in 2012. It is not known whether they crossed paths then, but with both being Dutch, they will be aware of each other already.

Van den Berg has always been highly rated since making his debut in the Eredivisie and signing for Liverpool. He’s even been dubbed as the next Virgil van Dijk.

But under Klopp, he never got a proper look in the first team. Instead, he has developed his stock while being out on loan.

This season has been his best loan spell yet, catching the eye in the Bundesliga with Mainz, where he has established himself as a top defender.

Given the Dutch connection and the fact that Liverpool are light in the centre-back department, it would not be a surprise to see Van den Berg promoted into the first team.

Just how good is Sepp van den Berg?

As mentioned previously, Van den Berg is really highly rated by Liverpool. The 22-year-old has also been lauded in the past by Lancashire Live for his ‘excellent’ loan spell at Preston North End.

He’s clearly someone with great potential, and at 22-years-old he is still relatively young for a defender.

Earlier this season he even matched Van Dijk’s aerial numbers, and it would be a shame if he wasn’t given a chance at least in pre-season for Liverpool this summer.
