Report: Newcastle United's owners have now decided what they are going to do with St James' Park

The Newcastle United owners have now decided what they are going to do with St James’ Park.

There has been an incredible demand for tickets ever since the change of ownership at Newcastle United, with renewed ambition behind the scenes coinciding with an incredibly competitive team on the pitch.

St James’ Park is always sold out, with thousands more fans unable to get a seat. The way tickets have been distributed via a ballot system has been criticised, but the main issue is that the club simply has more fans than their stadium can hold.

That has led to discussions and debates about whether St James’ Park should be expanded, or if the club should build a new stadium in a new location.

What has previously been said about the future of St James’ Park

The preference of most fans has been to remain at St James’ Park. That has also been the preference of the owners, with Mehrdad Ghodoussi stating shortly after the takeover that they would rather not leave their home.

Alan Shearer told the owners that if they do decide to build a new ground, it has to be in the heart of the city. St James’ Park’s unique location is part of what makes it so special, and the atmosphere could suffer if Newcastle United moved out.

The plan has always been to stay put, and the club have been working towards that end. A feasibility study has taken place to determine exactly how St James’ Park could be expanded, and now the results are in.

Newcastle United make St James’ Park decision

According to the Telegraph, the club have now decided that they will be expanding St James’ Park.

The feasibility study has seemingly determined that increasing the capacity is possible, with the owners wanting the ground to hold more than 60,000 people.

It looks like they will be able to do that, with the idea being that an expanded St James’ Park can host concerts and other sporting events. Last year we saw local hero Sam Fender perform, while rugby has also taken centre stage.

But the Telegraph add that building is not expected to start in 2024, while the council also need to speak to PIF about the St James’ Park leasehold. On top of that, funding for the expansion is yet to be arranged.

Exciting news for Newcastle United fans

This is brilliant news for everyone associated with the club. St James’ Park is special, and it would have been heartbreaking to say goodbye.

But now fans already inside the ground can stay put, while there will be more opportunities for supporters to get tickets.

It is a win-win situation, and one that will help the club grow commercially. That is the overall aim, with Newcastle wanting to compete at the top of the Premier League with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal.
