Reader’s Letters: Is CO2 is the dominant cause of global warming?

I read Mr Roulstone’s letter, Al Gore a ‘Giant of Science’? with some surprise.

How can he believe, as he says, that ‘CO2 is the dominant cause of global warming’ based only on a ‘simple Google search’?

If he believes that this is so, he must also believe that, despite the billions spent on propaganda urging emissions reductions, we have not been able to stop the inexorable rise in CO2.

MISSING CAPTION

Because this is so, climate “doomers” such as he must interpret the evidence to conclude that humanity is already doomed by our changing climate. If it is already too late to do anything about climate change, why should we bother to even try to do anything about it?

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) based in Geneva, redefined “climate” as being based on only 30 years of weather so that climate must, therefore, always be changing.

In the real world, weather is not becoming more extreme, the planet is greening and crop production is growing, and problems like sea level rise are occurring at a very manageable rate.

There may be a real basis in a conspiracy theory which believes that certain very wealthy and powerful individuals, for their own ends, wish to make the climate ‘threat’ feel real and immediate and potentially devastating for the business world.

If this were to be so, Mr Roulsone’s letter will certainly further those interests but ‘climate denial’ might prove to be far less damaging than the scientific defeatism implied by their propaganda.— R. Sheppard, Beckingham
