How to get smooth skin according to esthetician as experts warn against dangerous sugar waxing trend

Experts have warned against a dangerous sugar waxing trend on TikTok, but just how are you supposed to shave or wax your body hair safely?

For as long as human history, we have invented often dangerous tactics for fighting back age and maximizing our overall beauty. Now, thanks to apps like TikTok and Instagram, those dangerous methods are more readily available to the masses.

Experts have warned against the sugar-waxing trend

Over the last few years, and largely thanks to the innate power of social media, people have been employing a heated mix of sugar, lemon juice, and water to rid themselves of body hair. Though the method can be extremely effective if done right, it can also inflict painful burns if done wrong.

“Sugaring is a natural alternative to waxing, and it has resurfaced in a big way on TikTok recently. Using all-natural ingredients, sugaring is said to be ideal for the sensitive-skinned among us, and a cheaper alternative to salon waxing, consisting of just three kitchen staples – sugar, lemon, and water,” intimate health expert Stephanie Taylor said in 2021.

“Some women (and some men) have taken to waxing their legs and armpits using the sugaring technique, while others, are trying it out on their pubic hair too,” she added.

More recently, a 17-year-old girl was hospitalized after her skin peeled back from attempting the trend, subsequently leaving her with lifelong scars.

How to get the smoothest skin, safely

Stacey Tapping, CEO of the Beauty Sculpting Room, also warned against the practice: “While these trends can be enticing, it’s crucial to remember they could potentially be harmful when not performed by a professional. Luckily, there are safe and effective alternatives that can be done at home for smooth skin.”

The first step to the ultimate baby-smooth skin is a gentle body scrub, preferably one with natural exfoliants, Stacey told us.

Following the scrub of your life, Stacey continued to explain: “Next is the use of quality shavers and razors for hair removal. “Always opt for a new, sharp razor to avoid any chance of irritation or infection. Pair it with a moisturizing shaving cream or gel to ensure the razor glides easily over your skin, minimizing the risk of cuts and nicks.

“Also, skin hydration is key to a smooth skin texture. Immediately after showering or bathing, apply a quality moisturizing lotion or cream. This traps the moisture in your skin and will leave it feeling soft and smooth.”

Stacey also said that depilatory creams could be something to consider as they work by dissolving the hairs at the skin’s surface. As with any chemical product, you should always do a patch test first.

“If you’re targeting specific areas like the underarms or bikini area, consider home waxing kits. Ensure you follow the instructions meticulously to avoid any skin damage,” she added. “Invest in an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) device. Although they are pricier, they offer a more permanent solution to hair removal and are exceedingly easy to use.”
