'I wouldn’t even...': Neil Warnock's prediction for Sheffield Wednesday this season is scarily accurate

Sheffield Wednesday face Sunderland in their final game of the 2023/24 Championship season this weekend.

And once again, as has been the case with the last 10 or even 20 fixtures now, it’s the biggest game of their season, and of Danny Rohl‘s short career.

The German has defied all odds to give his side a huge chance of survival this season, at the expense of Huddersfield Town who now look set to be relegated, and Birmingham City who are the team in 22nd.

Of course, Sheffield Wednesday can still be relegated to League One this season.

But all they need is a point against a misfiring Sunderland team who’ve won just two of their last 14 in the Championship.

Failing that, Birmingham City need to beat 5th place Norwich City at home.

Before the 3-0 win over West Brom last time out, Baggies boss Carlos Corberan spoke fondly of Sheffield Wednesday.

He even entered his pre-match press conference with a graph showing the form table from the last 25 games, and the form table since Rohl took charge at Hillsborough.

From the last 25 games now, Sheffield Wednesday are 10th in the table and only three behind West Brom.

From the last 20 games, Wednesday are in 8th, from the last 15 they’re in 4th, and from the last five games they’re in 2nd, behind only Millwall.

The Owls have lost just one of their last seven now, winning three, and going into the Sunderland game on back-to-back wins.

Neil Warnock prediction about Sheffield Wednesday comes true

Sheffield Wednesday have their heads above water, and although the job is far from done, they seem to have a huge chance of staying in the division now.

And almost one month ago to the day, former Sheffield United boss and Football League veteran Neil Warnock gave his prediction about Wednesday’s survival bid.

Unsurprisingly, the 75-year-old predicted that the relegation fight would not only go down to the final day, but that Sheffield Wednesday would win back-to-back games.

He said:

“It’s going to go down right to the wire. I wouldn’t even write Sheffield Wednesday off. They have a disaster game and then they’ll win two games, so I wouldn’t write them off.”

Even the ‘disaster game’ that Warnock mentions; the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough which was one of the worst performances under Rohl, which came just a few days after Warnock’s comments.

How high can Sheffield Wednesday finish in the Championship

Again, although the job is far from done and Sheffield Wednesday can still be relegated on the final day, the Owls can certainly look up the table somewhat.

They were rooted to the foot of the table for the first few months of the season and even coming off the bottom, and moving into 23rd was an achievement in itself.

But if Wednesday win on the final day, QPR and Stoke City both lose and Blackburn Rovers fail to win, the Owls could finish as high as 17th depending on goal difference.

So what looked like one of the worst Championship seasons on record could now finish quite comfortably above the drop zone.

All eyes and focus will be on the trip to Sunderland though, and avoiding defeat.
