'Really poor': Pundit explains why Sheffield Wednesday should be worried about Birmingham City on the final day

A pundit has explained the ‘small reasons’ why Birmingham City could relegate Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday have put themselves in a brilliant position heading into the final day of the campaign, causing a huge upset against West Brom last time out.

The Owls clawed their way out of the relegation zone for the first time since the opening day with their 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers, and have now taken a huge step towards safety with the vital three points over the Baggies.

It is completely in Wednesday’s hands heading into their final game against Sunderland, as they sit in 20th place – three points above Birmingham City.

Danny Rohl‘s side just need a point to confirm their Championship status for next season, but wins for Birmingham and Plymouth Argyle could potentially see them drop down to League One.

Birmingham could still beat Sheffield Wednesday to safety

While the Owls will be fairly confident that they can avoid relegation this weekend, pundit Ryan Dilks has explained why they could be concerned about Birmingham’s chances of staying up instead.

Speaking on the Second Tier Pod, Dilks said: “‘On paper it looks bad, but there are reasons to be encouraged [for Birmingham].

“Firstly, their goal difference is much superior to Sheffield Wednesday so a win for Birmingham and a loss for Wednesday will do it. Another thing is they are a much better side at home than they are away. It’s the eleventh best home record in the league and the two games that Gary Rowett has won from his seven games in charge have come at home.

“And then, Norwich’s away form is really poor. So there is small reasons why Birmingham should be encouraged going into the final day, but at the same time it’s also looking bleak.”

The Owls have no excuses to not stay up now

Sheffield Wednesday will know they can still get relegated and they really shouldn’t be complacent heading to the Stadium of Light, but it is now completely in their hands.

Sunderland have only won two of their last 14 matches and have picked up only two points from their last six games on home soil, while they have nothing to play for anymore.

If the Owls continue the way they have been playing in recent weeks, then there is no reason why they can’t at least scrape a point.

They would also have to be very unlucky for Birmingham and Plymouth to then win too.

The Blues could well get a result against Norwich, who have already all but confirmed their place in the play-offs.

However, Plymouth’s chances at Hull City are surely slim, with the Tigers needing a win to be in with a shot of finishing in the top six.

Wednesday have a brilliant chance at staying up, but they will know that the job is far from done.
