A former adviser to former President Donald Trump sent him a warning shot about his latest statement about violence related to the 2024 presidential election.

In a lengthy interview with Time Magazine, Trump was asked about the prospect of political violence by his supporters this year.

“If we don’t win, you know, it depends,” Trump replied. “It always depends on the fairness of the election.”

Appearing on CNN to analyze the remarks, former Trump campaign adviser David Urban was asked why Trump couldn't have just vowed that there wouldn't be political violence no matter the results of the race.

"I don't have an answer for it," he said.

He then suggested that Trump's talk of political violence may damage Republicans just like it hurt them in the 2022 midterm elections when they vastly underperformed expectations when exit polls showed voters were acutely concerned by Trump's threat to democracy.

"We see this in 2022, right?" he said. "This is what this is what all the exit polling said in '22. We expected this big red wave... and then all the exit polling said, 'democracy, democracy, democracy.' Look, our hand is on the stove. Take if off!"

Former Biden White House Communications Director Kate Bedgingfield also said that Trump holding out the prospect of violence should he lose the election was politically damaging.

"You have an interview where he's saying essentially, if I don't like the outcome of this election, I'm going to do that again," she said, in reference to the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol. "That is a fundamentally dangerous thing. It is also, to David's point, political loser. I mean, we've seen time and again, we saw in the midterms in 2022 the concept of political violence, the notion and that our democracy was under threat, was motivating to people."
