'If it's down to me...': Barry Bannan issues 'clear' verdict on his future at Sheffield Wednesday

Barry Bannan has issued a ‘clear’ verdict on his future as he comes to the end of his Sheffield Wednesday contract.

Barry Bannan is one of a long list of players who are out of contract this summer.

The club are yet to open negotiations with their key players as Danny Rohl is eager to see his team focus on avoiding relegation before they consider their future.

With their final game against Sunderland arriving in just a few days time, Wednesday are likely to begin talks in the coming weeks, though the future of many could depend on which division they end up in.

The Owls will be desperately hoping they can keep hold of the likes of Di’Shon Bernard and Marvin Johnson, while there remains major uncertainty over whether club legends Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have played their last game at Hillsborough.

The former has once again spoken out about where he will end up next season, providing a very promising update for supporters.

Barry Bannan is very unlikely to leave

When asked by The Star if he expects to stay at the club, Bannan said: “Yeah, I think so.

“If it’s down to me then of course, I’ve made it quite clear that I’d like to stay here and finish my career here – that’s never changed and never will. We’ll find out in the next couple of weeks who is staying and going, but I think I’ll be here for a tenth season.”

Bannan has previously said he hopes to stay at Wednesday and reports have claimed he is extremely likely to stay, even if the club dropped down to League One.

The Owls need to wrap up Bannan’s future now

The midfielder’s salary would surely be a concern if they were relegated, but it may be less of a concern if they clinch the single point to keep them up this weekend.

Given all that Bannan has done for the club, Wednesday need to desperately get a new contract written up for the captain as soon as next week, as he deserves to have his doubts cleared up as soon as possible.

As for the rest of the team, it’s going to be a tricky summer convincing many of them to stay, even if they do stay up.

But if they can keep hold of the core of the squad then there is no doubt Rohl can build around it and the team will reap the rewards of his talent.
