‘A tough time’: Ashley Cole says he could barely cope with winger Tottenham sold for £5m

Ashley Cole was undoubtedly one of the best left-backs in the world during his prime years.

The England international was a top-tier defender. He had all of the attributes you could want from a full-back, and he rarely struggled.

However, speaking to Goal, Cole has now admitted that there were a number of wingers who he struggled against during his time in the Premier League.

The usual suspects got a mention as Cole stated that the likes of Raheem Sterling and Cristiano Ronaldo gave him the runaround, but he also noted that one former Tottenham player could also be a thorn in his side.

Ashley Cole struggled against Aaron Lennon

Cole stated that he always found Aaron Lennon difficult to play against along with Ronaldo, Sterling and Theo Walcott.

“I played against some top top players, you know, Aaron Lennon always gave me a tough time, Theo Walcott, Raheem Sterling, but the main one I would have to say is Cristiano,” Cole said.

Aaron Lennon was a nightmare

Aaron Lennon may not have been the best player in the world during his time at Tottenham, but he always posed a threat.

Say what you will about his technical ability, but there’s no accounting for that kind of pace.

Lennon was absolutely rapid, and once he got going, he was almost impsossible to stop.

Of course, Cole was no slouch himself and a lot of the time he was able to deal with Lennon, but the Spurs star did give him a few tough afternoons.

Lennon eventually left Tottenham for Everton in a deal worth £5m, and he never quite hit the same heights after leaving north London, but, for a few years, he was one of the most dangerous attacking players in the Premier League on his day.
