Lucky Charms: Detailing a prediction moved off of Notre Dame; Irish offer Florida DL commit

Here are today’s Lucky Charms, a Monday-Thursday nightly insider notes article on Notre Dame football recruiting.

*** On April 10, I logged a prediction for Notre Dame to land Midwest City (Okla.) Carl Albert’s Trystan Haynes, the nation’s No. 148 player and No. 18 cornerback in the country per the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking, but earlier today, I changed that pick to Oklahoma. I’ll be able to go more in depth into the “why” on this whole situation at a later, but the gist is that the 2025 Irish defensive back board has shifted.

I logged my prediction going into Haynes’ trip to South Bend that weekend, and there was a sense on the Irish side of things that he could pop during or soon after the visit. Haynes wanted to take his time with the process — understandably so — but with this, the vibe is that it might cost him a spot at ND. I could totally be off here, but that’s my read on the situation. We’ll see how things go moving forward, but I feel comfortable enough moving the pick to Oklahoma.

*** Notre Dame director of player personnel Chad Bowden was in Florida last week and stopped by Tallahassee (Fla.) James Rickards to inquire about Florida commit Jalen Wiggins, who ranks as the No. 92 overall player and No. 7 defensive lineman in the land according to the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking. Wiggins announced Tuesday that he received an offer from the Irish.

Wiggins seems to be keeping his recruiting process open and has been considering Stanford, which tells you right away that he’s strong academically and iw probably be interested in the Irish. Bowden’s visit to the school went well, and I’m hearing that Wiggins and the ND staff are discussing the possibility of getting the four-star recruit on campus for an official visit this summer.

ND’s pursuit of Wiggins reminds me of what we saw from the Irish last year when it went after a guy like Nnamdi Ogboko — a Georgia defensive line commit — getting him on campus for an official and working to flip him. The big difference here is that the staff got Ogboko to visit in the fall, while Wiggins would visit in June. Under Marcus Freeman, the Irish get off to a hot start and swing for the fences with prospects late in the cycle. ND is doing that a bit earlier in the 2025 class with only five or six spots left.
