‘What’s gone on?’: Chris Sutton can’t believe what's happened to £40m Tottenham player recently

Tottenham Hotspur are in danger of going off the rails.

The north London club have won just two of their last six league games, and their form is all over the place at the moment.

A number of Spurs’ key players are out of form at the moment, but perhaps the player who has declined the most is James Maddison.

The midfielder was, arguably Player of the Year during the first half of the season. However, since the turn of the year, he’s been way off his game.

Speaking on Fantasy 606, Chris Sutton has been discussing Maddison’s recent form, and he’s been shocked by how poor Maddison has been of late.

Chris Sutton shocked by James Maddison’s decline

Sutton spoke about Maddison’s recent form, questioning why he has been so poor as of late.

“What about Maddison just finding a bit of form at the end here? He’s fallen off a cliff hasn’t he Dave, what’s gone on there?” Sutton said.

James Maddison has fallen off

Sadly, this seems to be a running trend during Maddison’s career.

Even during his time at Leicester City, he’d often start seasons brilliantly, only to tail off towards the end of a campaign.

Only 15 of Maddison’s 47 Premier League goals have come during the second-half of league campaigns, and that just shows how he can be a quick starter who falls off towards the end of a season.

Perhaps it’s a fitness issue or perhaps it’s a confidence issue, but, one way or another, Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham need to figure out a way to keep Maddison playing at his best all season long rather than just in the first-half of a campaign.

The £40m man is a brilliant footballer, but this inconsistency has to stop if he wants to be considered one of the best in the country.
