Foxton Granta, Burwell & Exning and Cambridge St Giles among the winning teams during second round of Onyx League Division One matches

Foxton Granta (230-8) racked up a 186-run victory during Saturday’s home Onyx League Division One clash against Sawston & Babraham II (44).

The match marked a first competitive outing of 2024 for Foxton Granta, who saw their trip to Southill Park the previous weekend abandoned without a ball being bowled due to the wet weather.

However, Lewys Hill’s side showed no signs of any early-season rustiness as they eased to victory at the Foxton Recreation Ground.

Harry Hopwood top scored for the hosts with a knock of 77 runs from only 73 deliveries, while Johnny Atkinson scored a useful 46 from a more patient 95 balls.

Meanwhile, it was captain Hill that took centre stage with the ball in hand as he ended his 7.1 overs with figures of 6-8 alongside Henry Campbell’s 2-14.

As for the visitors, none of their batting line-up was able to rack up a double-figure total, with their top score of 9 belonging to opener Luke Herholdt.

Foxton Granta will be on their travels on Saturday (4 May) when they head to Eaton Socon, while Sawston & Babraham II will be aiming to put a sequence of back-to-back defeats behind them when they welcome Southill Park to the Spicers Sports Ground.

Elsewhere, Burwell & Exning (184-8) are the early leaders following a 75-run home victory at the expense of Old Leysians (109).

Opener Tom Griffiths provided the hosts with a solid platform thanks to his knock of 39 runs at the top of the order, while Nic Huckle (52) – batting at number eight – top scored with a half century.

And Huckle went on to do much of the damage with the ball in hand as Burwell & Exning skittled out visiting Old Leysians one ball into the 34th over.

The all-rounder recorded figures of 5-18 from his six overs, with further support provided by Josh Vowden (3-22) and Ben Seabrook (2-6).

Burwell & Exning, who also won their season opener away at Wisbech Town, will go in search of a third win in a row on Saturday (4 May) when travel into Essex to lock horns with Saffron Walden II.

Meanwhile, a five-for from Aatish Kean Maharaj helped Cambridge St Giles (242-6) to chalk up a 150-run win over Saffron Walden II (92).

Maharaj tore his way through the Walden batting line-up with figures of 5-12 from seven overs, while Zaheer Hussain (4-28) also caused plenty of damage in the Onyx League Division One clash.

Those two bowling performances came after St Giles skipper Sam Thain top scored with the bat with a knock of 53 runs from only 29 balls.

St Giles will be on their travels on Saturday (4 May) when they head to Blunham.

However, there was not such positive news for Histon (260-8) as they slipped to a narrow two-run defeat during their fixture against Ramsey (262-8).

Bowling first, hosting Histon were made to work hard in the field – particularly by Sandun Madushanka, who scored a run-a-ball 78.

Nevertheless, Histon’s John Turner was still economical with his figures of 3-31 from 10 overs.

In reply, overseas player Dan Cummins (87) and the experienced Ed Hyde (82) put on a partnership of 143 runs, but Histon still fell just short of their target.

Ben Leach’s side will aim to bounce back at the first time of asking when they travel to face Wisbech Town on Saturday (4 May).
