61-year-old resident dies in fire at Downtown Jersey City high-rise

A 61-year-old tenant died a two-alarm fire at a Downtown Jersey City high-rise Thursday morning, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Ramon Abello was unresponsive when he was located inside a 12th-floor unit of Metropolis Tower, a 21-story building at Marin Boulevard and Montgomery Street. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 6:45 a.m.

No other injuries were reported in the blaze, which was reported at 4:50 a.m. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department. Foul play is not suspected at this time.

The fire was contained to the one apartment with no exposure to the other units, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. Residents were initially evacuated, but were allowed back into the building.
