Report: Ferrari seem to have ‘convinced’ Adrian Newey to join in 2025 with ‘super’ job title

Adrian Newey is on the market for 2025 after Red Bull confirmed that he’d be leaving the team. And Ferrari seem determined to sign him.

Ferrari’s interest in the legendary designer dates back a long time. He’s turned down three approaches from the Prancing Horse over the course of his career.

Even before they knew for sure that he was on his way out of Red Bull, they laid the groundwork for a fourth attempt. They want to pair him with superstar driver Lewis Hamilton.

Now, Fred Vasseur and co. seem to be accelerating their efforts. The Frenchman apparently met with Newey in London ahead of the Miami Grand Prix this weekend.

The 65-year-old is giving ‘serious’ thought to accepting their offer this time. They seem to have an edge over the other competitors.

Aston Martin are willing to break the bank for Newey as they eye a championship challenge following the 2026 regulation changes. But team insiders think he’s more likely to go to Ferrari.

McLaren and Mercedes are also possible destinations, but neither have progressed as far as the Scuderia. Newey also has concerns over working with Toto Wolff at Brackley.

What Ferrari have offered Adrian Newey

Formu1a.uno have now revealed some details of the conversations between Newey and Ferrari. At Red Bull, he served as the chief technical officer, working alongside technical director Pierre Wache to build the cars that have dominated the ground effect era.

But Ferrari have offered him the role of a ‘super consultant’. It would be similar to the advisory work carried out by the team’s former designer Rory Byrne, except slightly more ‘elevated’.

Motorsport.com reported earlier this year that Byrne was helping Ferrari with their SF-24 car. The South African hasn’t worked for the team full-time since 2006 but has been available for guidance when called upon.

This is broadly in line with what Newey wants at this late stage of his career. As such, Ferrari’s proposal ‘seems to have convinced him’.

Can Adrian Newey end the long title drought at Ferrari?

It remains to be seen whether Newey signs on the dotted line with Ferrari ahead of his official Red Bull departure in the first quarter of 2025. He recently assured the team that he hadn’t signed an agreement elsewhere.

Having already signed Hamilton, Ferrari may see Newey as the final piece of a championship-winning puzzle. They haven’t won the drivers’ title since 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen, nor the constructors’ crown since 2008.

Ferrari-Hamilton-Newey would perhaps be the most decorated triumvirate in F1 history. Sky Sports commentator David Croft says he ‘would love’ to see it materialise.

Significantly, Ferrari aren’t stopping there. They’re also pushing to poach Wache from the world champions, but it’s unclear whether he’s willing to jump ship too.
