Proposals for two new fast food restaurants in a Norfolk town are facing opposition amid concerns for wildlife.
Officials at South Norfolk Council have recommended that the plans for new Burger King and Costa outlets off Victoria Road, in Diss, be refused.
The site is located next to the River Waveney and concerns have been raised about the development’s impact on the landscape and other environmental issues such as littering and artificial lighting.
The plans would include an electric charging centre and car park, drive-thru facility and space for a food bank.
The proposed Costa would be open between 7am and 7pm, while the Burger King would be open between 11am and 11pm. The businesses are expected to provide more than 40 jobs altogether.
However, the River Waveney Trust has said the development would be an “intrusion” and has “disregard” for the surrounding landscape.
A report to the council said: “The application proposes a well-founded offer that would result in some strong economic benefits.
“However, the proposals are also considered to raise significant concerns around ecological and biodiversity harms, visual and detrimental harm to landscape character.”
Councillors will meet to discuss the development on May 8.
