'He marched towards': Emery left 'fuming' at one Aston Villa star for what he did v Olympiacos - journalist

Aston Villa were stunned at Villa Park on Thursday night, losing 4-2 to Olympiacos in a game that saw Unai Emery left ‘fuming’ with one of his players.

It was not the night that Aston Villa would have both hoped for or expected, as Unai Emery’s side lost 4-2 to Olympiacos in the opening leg of the Europa Conference League semi-final.

The Villans conceded a hattrick to Ayoub El Kaabi and a deflected goal courtesy of Santiago Hezze to see four put past them at home, with Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby’s goals merely standing as a consolation ahead of the second leg.

Villa must now travel to Greece with a monumental task to overcome, heading into the second leg two goals behind.

A disallowed goal, a penalty refusal and a penalty miss summed up what was a night to forget for the hosts, leaving Emery deeply unhappy with one of his players.

Unai Emery was ‘fuming’ with Douglas Luiz during Aston Villa loss to Olympiacos

After El Kaabi put the visitors 2-0 up during the first half, the Villa boss was spotted shouting at Douglas Luiz and goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

As relayed by journalist Jacob Tanswell, the Spaniard ‘marched towards’ Luiz before being seen ‘shouting’ at the Brazilian, before he fired his frustration at Olsen.

“Emery is fuming at Douglas Luiz. An injury to an Olympiacos player gives Emery the chance to call over his players, but before they can get to him, he’s marched towards Douglas Luiz, shouting.

“Emery then turns his attention to Robin Olsen, gesturing aboutAVFC build up”

While it was Watkins who lost the ball to trigger the visitors’ quick counterattack, the manager’s frustration towards his midfielder and the goalkeeper was viable, as Villa consistently looked panicked when in possession.

Douglas Luiz and Robin Olsen had nights to forget against Olympiacos

After the 2-2 draw with Chelsea, Luiz was handed the chance to redeem himself after his below-par performance however, the Brazil international did the opposite.

From looking fragile in possession in the first half to conceding a penalty and then missing a penalty late on, the 25-year-old will be eager to put this evening far behind him.

The same will go for Olsen, who had a lot of faith put in him as he came in for the suspended Emi Martinez however, his approach to building play from the back was simply nowhere near the levels seen from the Argentine.

There were significant gaps in Villa’s play on the night, handing them a magnificent challenge to attempt to overcome next week in Greece, conceding four at Villa Park on a night that was poised to deliver much more.
