Low turnout for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Police and Crime Commissioner election

The turnout for the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire has been announced - and it is lower than for the previous election.

The total turnout for the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire has been confirmed as 25.63 percent whereas in the last election in 2021 it was 37.01 percent of the electorate.

In places where local council elections coincided with the PCC election yesterday, the turnout was slightly higher.

Police and Crime Commissioner candidates: Anna Smith (Labour), Edna Murphy, (Liberal Democrats), Darry Preston (Conservative),

Voters went to the polls yesterday (Thursday, may 2) to decide between three candidates: Darryl Preston (Conservative), Anna Smith, (Labour), and Edna Murphy, (Liberal Democrats).

A graph created by Cambridge Independent columnist Phil Rodgers showed the turnout broken down by area.

Phil Rodgers charts the Cambridgeshire PCC election turnout compared with the previous election in 2021.

He is predicting this will work in Labour candidate Anna Smith’s favour as the areas of higher turnout, particularly Cambridge city, traditionally have more Labour voters.

The final result is set to be announced later today. The count for the Cambridge City Council elections will begin at 2pm and those results are expected around 5pm today. Results will be made available here when they come in.

Heading into the election, the Labour-controlled city council has 25 Labour councillors, 11 Liberal Democrats, four Greens, one Conservative and one independent.

Every ward will be contested by Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens and the Conservatives. Three independents will also be standing - David Summerfield in Castle, David Carmona in Newnham and William Bannell in Romsey.

Simon Brignell will stand for the Community Party of Britain in Abbey and Christopher Wilkinson will represent Freedom Alliance in Petersfield.

The council is responsible for services including waste collection, leisure facilities, council housing and planning.
