'Especially on that side': Elijah Adebayo says Luton Town targeted one Everton player last night

Luton Town striker Elijah Adebayo has claimed his side were looking to target one Everton player in particular on Friday evening.

Sean Dyche’s men took a point back to the North West in what was an entertaining night at Kenilworth Road.

The Toffees took the lead through a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty before Adebayo equalised under 10 minutes later.

The hosts – in need of three points – showed more impetus in the second period but were unable to find the winner. Rob Edwards’ men will now be anxiously watching Sheffield United’s clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after the game, Luton striker Adebayo claimed the Hatters were intentionally targeting one Everton player.

The 26-year-old striker produced a brilliant piece of centre-forward play to level the scores, unfortunately at Ashley Young’s expense; a move that the hosts choreographed.

Adebayo told Sky Sports: “It was something the gaffer alluded to throughout the week. Obviously, Ashley Young has had a great career and is a top professional; we just thought with both fullbacks, we could target them, especially on that side.

“We have Fred on that side with his pace, get some crosses into the box and you have me and Carlton there to try and head it. My thing is always that I try to see the back of the defender’s neck. When I see that, I know the defender’s in trouble. It’s something I’ve learned coming through.”

Tough night at the office for Ashley Young

Luton’s tactical plan was clear to see, and it came as no surprise. Young has had a fantastic career; sadly, his body is getting the better of him.

The 38-year-old probably didn’t want to have to manmark one of the most physical and mobile forwards in the league. Per FotMob, Young only managed to win one aerial duel, demonstrating Luton’s plan to expose his physical shortcomings.

Overall, Dyche will be pleased with how his team faired on Friday. It was never going to be an easy task, but, for the most part, Everton were untroubled, particularly when the hosts put the pressure on in the second half.

Another positive day at the office after what’s been a brilliant couple of weeks for the Toffees.
