Chris Sutton delivers 'brutal' verdict as Newcastle United beat Burnley 4-1

Chris Sutton has given his verdict on Newcastle United’s performance as the Magpies won 4-1 against Burnley.

Eddie Howe‘s side are up to sixth in the Premier League, and have now closed the gap to Tottenham Hotspur to four points. Inside the club, there is some belief that Newcastle United can end the campaign in fifth, and that is certainly possible after this result.

It was predicted to be a tough game for the Magpies, with pundits Chris Sutton and Paul Merson both failing to tip a Toon win.

But after a slow start that saw Burnley create plenty of openings, Newcastle weathered the storm and went on to secure another emphatic victory.

Newcastle dazzle on the road against Burnley

Newcastle got their fifth away win of the season at Turf Moor, completing a convincing double over relegation-threatened Burnley. This win on the road was largely down to a 21 minute blitz, with Howe’s men scoring three quickfire goals in the first half.

Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes ensured Newcastle had a 3-0 lead at half time, with the game as good as won after the opening 45 minutes.

Alexander Isak made it four in the second half, netting a tap in just moments after having a penalty saved. He has now scored 20 Premier League goals, as he continues to enjoy the best campaign of his career.

Frustratingly, Newcastle were unable to keep a clean sheet, with Dara O’Shea scoring a late consolation for Burnley.

But that is all it was, as the Magpies head back to Tyneside with another three points.

Chris Sutton gives his verdict on Newcastle’s performance

Before the game, Sutton had ambitiously predicted a 3-3 draw, but he was completely wrong.

And the former Premier League forward has now admitted to BBC Sport to being blown away by the Magpies, who were ‘outstanding’ on Saturday.

“Newcastle were outstanding,” he said.

“Newcastle need Europe this season and Burnley need a miracle. Burnley were in good form before today but today was brutal and I can’t make a case for them staying up.”

Everything goes right for ‘outstanding’ Newcastle

Once they got over Burnley’s fast start, Newcastle were dominant. The only two negatives coming out of the game were that Howe’s men did not score more and that they were unable to keep a clean sheet.

Other than that, it was a pretty perfect afternoon. Isak continued his great form, while Callum Wilson hit double figures for the season. Lewis Hall was exceptional at left-back, as was Anthony Gordon in front of him. Sean Longstaff looked much improved, and the same goes for Jacob Murphy.

On top of that, we saw Joelinton and Miguel Almiron return from injury. That is a huge boost ahead of the final three games, while we also had Nick Pope back on the bench.

It was a great afternoon for Newcastle United, who truly were outstanding.
