Marvin Johnson makes hilarious dig at Xisco Munoz after Sheffield Wednesday secure Championship safety

Sheffield Wednesday secured their Championship status with a 2-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday will be playing in the Championship again next season after their incredible turnaround under Danny Rohl was complete.

The Owls beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light to finish the season in 20th place of the table, and three points above the drop zone.

Wins for all of Birmingham City, Plymouth Argyle, and Blackburn Rovers on the final day meant that Wednesday needed to win.

They go into the summer on the back of three-straight wins and six games unbeaten.

The season was a chaotic one for all involved, though maybe more so for Marvin Johnson.

The 33-year-old was completely exiled by former manager Xisco Munoz but immediately brought back into the fold by Rohl, who’s not been let down since.

Johnson has scored four and assisted four more in 29 Championship outings for Sheffield Wednesday this season.

Munoz left the club without a win to his name.

He oversaw 12 games in all competitions and left the Owls rooted to the foot of the table and without a prayer in the battle against relegation.

It’s made Rohl and his players’ achievement all the more incredible, with Sheffield Wednesday becoming the first-ever Championship team to beat the drop after going winless in their opening 13 league games of the season.

After the Sunderland win, Johnson enjoyed a hilarious exchange with a fan on social media:

What next for Marvin Johnson

It was revealed by The Star earlier this year that Johnson is one of the many first-team players out of contract at Hillsborough this summer.

Expect the players and coaches to now have a well-deserved break and then get right into the conversations and planning for next season.

And after such an impressive season, with January links to Ipswich Town showing Johnson’s class, Rohl will surely be keen on a new deal for the Englishman.

Although he’s one of the older players in the team now, he’s certainly showing no signs of slowing down, with his performances this season arguably his best in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt.

He plays that left wing-back role so effectively and whilst there may be some criticisms when he’s playing as a standard left-back, Rohl definitely seems to prefer having wing-backs.

And Johnson’s attacking mindset and energy compliments the style of play brilliantly.

He’s done incredibly well to come out of the dark under Munoz and into the light under Rohl, doing so quickly and with ease too.

Sheffield Wednesday shouldn’t hesitate in handing Johnson a new contract, providing he wants to stay.
