Report: 9-time F1 champion’s team principal says Adrian Newey would be ‘perfect fit’ after Red Bull exit

It appears as though next season one Formula 1 team will benefit from the arrival of Adrian Newey following his decision to leave Red Bull.

After winning countless titles with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, the 65-year-old is ready to take on a new challenge.

A report from the German outlet Auto Motor und Sport has provided more details on Adrian Newey’s future.

There are already several teams who have thrown their hats into the ring to hire Newey.

Aston Martin have reportedly offered Newey a huge contract to join the team and be reunited with engineer Dan Fallows.

Ferrari are also very interested in Newey and he’s now ‘seriously considering’ their offer.

Sky Sports reporter Ted Kravitz has explained why he believes retirement isn’t an option for the heralded designer.

That would be good news for Williams team principal James Vowles who believes that Newey would be the ‘perfect fit’ to take the team to the next level.

They appear to need all the help they can get given away they’ve still yet to score their first point this season.

James Vowles believes Adrian Newey is the ‘perfect fit’ for Williams

The Miami Grand Prix was supposed to be an opportunity for Williams to take a step forward.

For the first time in 2024, Williams had a spare chassis available in the paddock, giving Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant one less thing to worry about.

Unfortunately, things haven’t gone to plan thus far and Albon was even out-qualified by his teammate for the first time in his career.

Sargeant managed to climb up to 10 in the Sprint Race but frustratingly for the American that doesn’t equate to a point in that format.

The 23-year-old then failed to get out of Q1 despite being just a tenth off Albon, although he did appear to be impeded by Yuki Tsunoda.

Albon once again made it into Q2 but still has a fight on his hands to score the team’s first point.

Unsurprisingly, James Vowles thinks Newey would be perfect for Williams to help them return to the front of the grid.

He’s worked with the team before and four separate world champions can thank him for his contribution to their achievements.

Williams enter the battle to sign Adrian Newey

The report from AMuS suggests Williams have ‘signalled’ their interest in Newey and relay comments from their team principal.

James Vowles said: “We only had a short conversation at first. After all, Williams was the team where Adrian [Newey] celebrated his breakthrough.

“We are a racing team without political games. A small, familiar team that is looking for its way back to the top. That would be it’s a perfect fit if someone wants a new challenge.”

“There is no team, including ourselves, McLaren and Red Bull, where he hasn’t made a significant difference.

“You would have to be very stupid if you didn’t at least start some conversations at this point.”

Vowles went on to admit that while Newey might be perfect for Williams, they’re not in a position to offer him a similar salary to that of Ferrari or Aston Martin.

Instead, he would be appealing to Newey’s desire for a challenge and he’s taken on projects before where he’s joined a team in the midfield and helped them win championships.

It’s what he did with Red Bull and given money is unlikely to be an issue for him, an emotional return to a team where the likes of Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve all benefitted from his expertise would be very much welcomed.

Williams have nine Constructors’ Championships to their name, could Newey be the man to help them win a tenth?
