Aston Villa fans all saying the same thing about Moussa Diaby after 1-0 defeat to Brighton

Aston Villa fans are saying the same thing about Moussa Diaby after the Villans’ disappointing 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

Aston Villa ended the week with two defeats from the two games they played, adding to their 4-2 loss to Olympiacos with a 1-0 away defeat against Brighton.

On Sunday afternoon, Unai Emery’s side looked jaded at the Amex, falling short to an 87th-minute goal from Joao Pedro, who was denied from the spot by Robin Olsen, only to turn in the rebound.

It was an incredibly lacklustre display from the visitors, who recorded just two shots during the game, telling of their lack of presence on the South Coast.

Besides Olsen, who received a lot of criticism for his performance against Olympiacos on Thursday, no Villa player had an impressive individual display however, some certainly contributed less than others.

One player who was unable to provide much throughout the contest was Moussa Diaby, who was anonymous in attack on a day that required the available Villa players to step up amid a host of key injury woes.

The Frenchman looked far from being at the levels he has shown glimpses of being capable of, seeing many Villa fans react to his performance on social media, let’s see what Aston Villa fans have been saying about Diaby after his display v Brighton…

Aston Villa fans react to Moussa Diaby performance v Brighton

The Athletic journalist Jacob Tanswell dubbed the 24-year-old as ‘peripheral’, adding that he had made the fewest touches of any starting player, aside from Morgan Rogers, who was hauled off in the first half.

Tanswell’s comment was an opinion shared by Villa fan @TheTechnician44, who tweeted, ‘Diaby is non existent again in this game…’

From wholly absent to ineffective, fellow Villa supporter @villaej_ formed a comparison between Diaby and how Leon Bailey started life at Villa Park by saying, ‘If Diaby doesn’t have space to run into, he’s pretty ineffective. Very similar to Bailey when he arrived. Back him to improve massively next season.’

Against Brighton, the France international lost possession six times, and alarmingly, completed just 58% of his passes, accounting for seven out of 12 he completed, via Sofascore.

On Twitter, fan @SeamusORobson said ‘I’d love to see Diaby’s passing stats this afternoon, it feels like he has lost possession nearly every time he has had it’, which supported the numbers the forward produced in his 73-minute cameo.

Had there been more players in the Villa squad available, Emery may have chosen to start Diaby on the bench, with him needing to be demoted from the starting XI earlier in the season to avoid complacency.

Villa supporter @IanMSanders commented on the record-signings slow starts in the Premier League by saying, ‘Diaby having another poor start – maybe there is a good player in there but boy oh boy it’s wrapped up snugly at the moment.’

Taking a more outspoken approach to sum up the summer arrival’s performance at the Amex, Villa fan @UJstGotLittUp claimed that Diaby is ‘right up there’ with the worst transfers in the club’s history, ‘When we talk about the worst transfers in our history then Diaby is right up there if he doesn’t improve.’

Moussa Diaby has had a lacklustre first season at Aston Villa

It’s been a difficult year for Diaby, and one to criticise lightly as he continues to find his feet in the Premier League after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Frenchman has shown glimpses of why Emery and Monchi were so eager to sign him last summer however, he’s struggled immensely to secure consistently impressive performances in a Villa shirt.

That being said, there are worse individual seasons than contributing to 13 Premier League goals in a debut campaign, with a lot of time and a lot of opportunity for the 24-year-old to grow into the manager’s thrilling project.
