'I didn't expect': Inter Miami star reveals what it's like playing alongside Lionel Messi

Matias Rojas has detailed what it’s like playing alongside Lionel Messi after signing for Inter Miami last month.

The Paraguay international officially joined the Herons in April after weeks of speculation that eventually saw Rojas sign for Inter Miami, where the 28-year-old forward has made an immediate impact.

Rojas made his debut against the New England Revolution last weekend where he played a crucial role in Benjamin Cremaschi’s goal, and the versatile winger went one step further on Saturday against the New York Red Bulls with a brace.

And Rojas has now given his verdict on what it has been like to play alongside Messi.

Rojas praises Messi after electric Inter Miami performance

Speaking to Deporte Total USA, Rojas was full of praise for Messi, a player, the forward once hailed as the best of all-time as the Argentine managed an MLS record five assists on Saturday night against the Red Bulls.

With Luis Suarez scoring a hat-trick and praising Rojas, it was quite the night for the Paraguay forward, who gave his thoughts after the match on what it has been like to play alongside his idol at Inter Miami.

Rojas said when asked what it’s felt like to play alongside Messi: “It’s a big responsibility. There are two ways to approach playing with him, you can either sink or you can swim. In my opinion, he is the best in history.

“You can either play with the fact he will not understand your pressure or you let it go, and he solves all that with what he does. That pass to me for my second goal was something I didn’t expect, but it makes it easier for you. You need to take advantage of that chemistry, and me and the team did just that.”

Rojas has struck up an instant connection with Messi

Much of Inter Miami’s success with Messi in the roster has come down to the squad striking a connection with the Argentine superstar despite the lack of overall experience.

And in two games, Rojas has done just with the 36-year-old forward, with the former Corinthians star playing well off his Inter Miami teammate and seeing spectacular results in the process.

Indeed, Rojas is already on his way to becoming a star name for Inter Miami, and his performance against the Red Bulls will be up there with one of his best in recent years for club and country.
