BEMs and MBEs given to those active in their communities in Cambridgeshire

A number of BEM and MBE presentations were made by Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Julie Spence at Great St Mary’s Church in Cambridge on St George’s Day (23 April).

Among those being presented with awards were Sheila Betts, from Trumpington – chair of the management committee of The Jarman Centre – who received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to young people, Lorna Woor, from Fulbourn, who received a BEM for services to the community in Cambridge, and Kenneth Winterbottom, from Whittlesford, who received a BEM for services to the community in Whittlesford.

Mr Winterbottom was a parish councillor for 44 years.

Meanwhile, an honorary MBE was presented to Prof Daniela De Angelis, from Cambridge, who received the award for services to medical research and public health.

Prof De Angelis is an internationally recognised leader in the field of statistical methods for infectious disease.

John Sharman received the BEM for services to the community in Peterborough, while Moez Nathu received the BEM for services to refugees and asylum seekers in Peterborough.
