Cambridge City Council May 2024 election results in full: Labour retains grip but Greens make gain at expense of prominent Lib Dem

Labour retained its firm grip on Cambridge City Council, retaining all of its seats that were up for election - but it was the Greens who made a gain, at the expense of a prominent Liberal Democrat.

Hugh Clough won in Newnham for the Green party, ousting Lucy Nethsingha, who is also the Lib Dem leader of the county council.

It means the Greens - for whom Naomi Bennett held on to Abbey ward, with an increased majority - now have five seats on the city council, compared to the Lib Dems 10. There remains one independent and one Conservative, while Labour continues to dominate with 25 seats. Some 14 of the 42 seats were up for election.

City council party leaders Mike Davey (Lab, Petersfield) and Tim Bick (Lib Dem, Market) held on to theirs, and there was no scare at the count for Labour this time in Cherry Hinton, where former mayor Mark Ashton held his seat.

In Castle, Antoinette Nestor retained the seat for Labour with the biggest majority it has enjoyed in the ward for some time. But Independent David Summerfield also put in a strong performance, pushing the Lib Dems into third place.

And in Coleridge, held by Tim Griffin for Labour, there was a strong result for the Greens from Sarah Nicmanis, with Conservative Shapour Meftah in third and the Lib Dems trailing in fourth here.

Some familiar Labour stalwarts held their seats. Dave Baigent won comfortably in Romsey, while Gerri Bird was returned to represent East Chesterton and mayor Jenny Gawthrope Wood beat the Conservatives’ Nazrul Islam in King’s Hedges.

In West Chesterton, a battle between red and yellow went Labour’s way, with Sam Carling holding off Jamie Dalzell’s challenge by 208 votes.

The margin was a little tighter in Trumpington, where the Lib Dems’ Nadya Lokhmotova beat Labour’s Carlos Toranzos by 108 votes.

Arbury proved a safe seat for Labour, with Patrick Sheil way out in front, and only 49 votes between the other parties.

And in Queen Edith’s, Immy Blackburn-Horgan cemented her win from November’s by-election for the Lib Dems with an improved majority.

Turnout was 37.8 per cent across the city, rising as high as 48.3 per cent in West Chesterton and falling as low as 32 per cent in Abbey.

Cambridge City Council May 2024 election turnout by ward. Table: Cambridge City Council

Earlier in the day, Darryl Preston was re-elected for the Conservatives as the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough police and crime commissioner, beating Labour’s Anna Smith - a city councillor - into second, and Lib Dem county councillor Edna Murphy into third.

Elsewhere, Labour became the biggest party on Peterborough City Council, but not enough to take the authority out of no overall control. And James Catmur won the by-election for the Lib Dems in Great Paxton ward on Huntingdonshire District Council.
