Arsenal told ‘crucial’ £27m star is now repeating feat managed by one Invincibles icon

Journalist Charles Watts has now named one Arsenal player who is currently replicating the feats produced by one Invincibles icon.

Arsenal were able to maintain their pace in the Premier League title race with a 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Whilst this title race isn’t in the Gunners’ own hands, due to Manchester City’s game in hand, all Mikel Arteta’s side can do is keep winning their own matches.

A number of players have stepped up in recent weeks, at this crunch stage in the campaign. Arteta is also benefitting from having a full complement of players to choose from. Thomas Partey has returned from injury to bolster the midfield, whilst a fit Takehiro Tomiyasu has improved Arsenal’s play on the left flank.

Leandro Trossard is also enjoying a run of consecutive starts. The Belgian attacker is now ahead of Gabriel Martinelli in the pecking order, and for good reason, based on recent form.

The 29-year-old has racked up 16 goals across all competitions this season, and netted again against Bournemouth this weekend. The £27 million former Brighton man has now scored four goals in his last six Premier League outings.

Leandro Trossard hailed for replicating Freddie Ljungberg impact at Arsenal

Charles Watts has been hugely impressed with Trossard’s contribution, likening it to the impact that Freddie Ljungberg was able to have for the club during the run-in of the 2001/02 season.

The Swedish winger was able to bag six Premier League goals in the span of just five Premier League games during the final stage of that campaign, as Arsenal went on to win the title.

Ljungberg was a key player for the Gunners again in 2004, when Arsenal secured another league title triumph, this time without having lost a single game during the campaign, earning themselves the ‘Invincibles’ moniker.

Speaking on his Inside Arsenal YouTube channel, the reporter said: “Freddie in that 2002 was just, every single game he was popping up and scoring the crucial goal…Trossard is doing that at the moment…He is Arsenal’s best finisher, there’s no doubt about that. When you get a big chance, you want it to fall to Leo.”

What Arsenal need from Leandro Trossard now

Trossard has been described as the best finisher in the Arsenal squad by others, and is now living up to that reputation.

Arteta now needs Trossard to maintain his form in the final two games of the season. If Trossard can keep scoring, and Arsenal can keep taking maximum points, then it may prove enough for them to claim their first title since Ljungberg and the Invincibles did it 20 years ago.
