As Cole Messina got ready to do his postgame interview with the SEC Network Plus crew, Blake Jackson let it be known.

The phrase Jackson kept repeating in the dugout after South Carolina’s 9-4 win over Missouri on Sunday: “Cole Messina — SEC Player of the Week!” Looks like he was right.

After an incredible week of play, Messina was named the SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

The junior catcher finished the week 9-for-14 with seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple, three home runs, two stolen bases and 10 RBI. In the Missouri series, he went 7-for-11 with two homers, a double, triple and seven RBI. He was a huge reason why the Gamecocks were able to take the series this past weekend.

“Just taking my best swing no matter what and not worrying about past at-bats,” Messina told GamecockCentral on Friday. “I’m keeping my head going on one at-bat and being myself and doing whatever the team needs.”

Messina is slashing .316/.454/.673 with 14 homers and 49 RBI in 44 games this season.

South Carolina will wrap up its four-game roadtrip and midweek slate against Winthrop in Rock Hill on Tuesday night. First pitch is at 6 p.m. on ESPN Plus.
