'I wasn't sure...': Key Sheffield Wednesday man now reveals his contract is actually up in June

One key Sheffield Wednesday figure has now revealed he could leave the club this summer.

For the first time in eight months, Sheffield Wednesday have been able to relax after confirming their Championship status for next season.

The Owls went unbeaten in their final six games of the campaign, but still left it to the last day to be able to avoid relegation by three points.

A 2-0 win over Sunderland ensured their safety and sent the players and supporters into huge celebrations over the weekend.

While the club are able to take great pride out of their success, the board and manager will be straight back to work as they look to tie down vital assets to new contracts.

The likes of Josh Windass, Barry Bannan and Di’Shon Bernard are all out of contract this summer, while the Owls have already opened ‘talks’ with the former over extending his stay at Hillsborough.

Staying in the Championship will have given Wednesday a huge boost in their bid to keep hold of some of their key players. However, the squad aren’t the only assets that they need to be concerned about.

Sheffield Wednesday could lose a key figure in just one month

The Owls’ assistant coach Chris Powell has confirmed that his contract actually expires this summer, despite only joining in October.

Speaking to The Star, Powell said: “There are discussions, and we know that happens at every club at the end of every season about which players you’d like to retain and which are going to move on – also what you’d like to bring in. Like I say, that happens at every club, and we’re no different.

“My contract actually ends this June, I didn’t sign until the end of next year like everyone else. That was just because when I came in in October with Dan – we’d only met a couple of times when I was with England and he was with Germany – we didn’t really know each other, and I wasn’t sure how it’d all go.”

How important is keeping Chris Powell at Hillsborough?

Sheffield Wednesday’s main priority will be tying down players, and Chris Powell’s praise for the club suggests he doesn’t really have any intention of leaving this summer.

However, like Danny Rohl, Powell has clearly had a very positive impact on the team since his arrival.

The 54-year-old has previously worked with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Heung-min Son and Harry Kane, so there is no doubt that has coaching abilities, as well as his experience, can play a key role in Wednesday’s ambitions.

Rohl’s coaching staff have been excellent this season, with Akim Famewo one player who has expressed his appreciation for Powell.

While the Owls should work to keep hold of their key players, they certainly can’t forget about Powell.
