'We need to': Barry Bannan says one thing will help Sheffield Wednesday continue their 'upward spiral'

Barry Bannan has explained exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need to continue on an ‘upward spiral ‘next season.

Sheffield Wednesday ended the campaign in brilliant fashion, winning their final three games to confirm their place in the Championship.

The Owls kept three clean sheets in their last six matches, as well as picking up 14 points from a possible 18.

It comes as a huge surprise to many, after Wednesday spent the first eight months of the campaign stuck in the relegation zone.

It wasn’t until they beat Blackburn Rovers just a few weeks ago that they climbed out of the bottom three, before going onto finish three points clear.

The atmosphere around Hillsborough has been completely transformed recently and everyone is now desperate to keep it up as they end into the new season in a few months.

Sheffield Wednesday need to keep hold of Danny Rohl

Barry Bannan wasn’t too eager to celebrate their success though, and has already highlighted what they need to do to stay on an ‘upward spiral’.

Speaking to The Star, the midfielder said: “We need to learn from our mistakes.

“I’ve said this about our performances as well. We’ve had setbacks our whole careers as players, and we learn from that. As a club we need to learn from the mistakes we’ve made in previous seasons and this season.

“We need to hit the ground running now, it’s not about doing it six weeks into preseason trying to get people in – we need to get ready now and try and get a head start before we come back for next season.

“But we’ve got the right man in charge, there’s no better man we could ask for, so as long as you keep him and give him what he wants, I’m sure the club will be on an upward spiral.”

Dejphon Chansiri can finally do something to please fans

Danny Rohl is clearly the key factor that has overseen Sheffield Wednesday’s huge transformation.

The players have looked miles better over the course of his eight-month stint at Hillsborough, but without him, they could well collapse again next season.

So while the team need to ‘learn from their mistakes’, keeping hold of Rohl is undoubtedly the most important thing for the Owls.

Recent reports have claimed they have already held ‘positive’ talks with the 35-year-old and there is an expectation that he will stay this summer, but things can change in football very quickly.

Dejphon Chansiri needs to make it very clear that he is prepared to back Rohl and meet his demands if it means he will stay put.

The chairman hasn’t been too keen to splash the cash in recent years, but it is clear that Rohl could finally help Wednesday reach their potential with a little helping hand.
